Lukaku

Chelsea made significant efforts last summer to offload several underperforming players at the club, as part of their strategy to advance the club’s rebuilding process under the leadership of Todd Boehly. They successfully brought in younger talents, and the club is now in the process of finalizing the departure of a few remaining players from the previous regime. One of the notable players in this category is Romelu Lukaku, whose future at Chelsea seems uncertain.

Currently, the Belgian striker is on loan at AS Roma, following two unsuccessful loan spells with other Serie A teams. Inter Milan had expressed interest in reacquiring Lukaku for a third stint at the club, where he previously played for ‘Il Biscione’ before his move to Chelsea in 2020, followed by a loan spell last season. However, these negotiations fell through when it came to light that Lukaku had been holding secret talks with Italian rivals Juventus regarding a potential loan move for the season. Unfortunately, the deal with Juventus also collapsed due to Chelsea’s inability to reach an agreement.

Since joining Roma just before the close of the summer transfer window, Romelu Lukaku has quickly established himself as a valuable asset under the management of Jose Mourinho. Despite Roma’s shaky start in the league, Lukaku has managed to score an impressive 7 goals in his first seven appearances for the club. It is worth noting that Chelsea has included a release clause in Lukaku’s new contract, which can be activated for £37 million next summer. This is a stark contrast to the approximately £97.5 million that Chelsea initially paid to Inter Milan for the striker, who struggled to find the net, scoring only 15 goals in 44 games during the 2021-2022 season.

Despite Chelsea’s substantial expenditures, the club’s financial standing is not on the brink of violating Financial Fair Play (FFP) regulations. Nevertheless, it is always beneficial for a club that engages in significant spending to recoup some funds. In this case, Chelsea is facing a considerable loss on the player, but it appears to be the right time for all parties involved to part ways.
